| I spotted this at an
auction and thought it might be something I could fix up and sell on
Ebay. One of the biggest tricks to buying things like this is to
have an eye for pretty things despite their current condition. This
had a lot of nice patterns hidden in the thick layer of dirt and tarnish
and I know it would be a keeper if I could get it shined up again. The problem here is time vs. money in order to make it worthwhile. Every drop of polish costs money and my time is already stretched so I always have to keep the clock going when working on any restoration. |

Polishing
brass can be tough work and when it's this badly tarnished it's often best
to just not get involved at all. My problem is that I hate seeing
anything I consider a classic piece get tossed away or melted down at the
scrap yard. Also, this ashtray only cost me a dollar at auction so I
was already a little ahead of the game. I tried the hand method on this and it took me three hours and $3 worth of paste to just get one small area done. I knew professionals just had to have some tricks up their sleeves so I hit the Internet and found just the thing!
